Just yesterday I wrote someone that I really, really, really wanted to be a clerk at a bookstore instead of a small business owner. Just for a day or two. Or maybe a month. Just until I am able to remove a couple of these boulders from between my shoulder blades. Just to take a breather.

But we don't get to stop when we're on the coaster. I didn't fear the unknown as much when I started my own business. Back then I didn't even know what I had to fear. These days, when things are rough, it's the *known* that I fear. I know what working for myself is all about -- it's hard work, each day, every day. It's waking up and heading to the computer, knowing you have deadlines that you have to meet. It's driving to the PO box, hoping you have money to pay the rent. I know it'll be tough next month and the month after. I know what to fear now, and that makes it even tougher... some days.

But, luckily, most days ... I ADORE what I do.

Thanks for the thoughtful post.

[Beth,

You're very welcome.

The safety net may be gone but we have our freedom and that is priceless. I would not trade my freedoms of autonomy and expression for anything. Let's face it, employment was not designed with the employee in mind.

[I always admired the publisher Marc Allen's reported idea (New World Library) to profit share with his employees.
He describes this partnership approach well in "Visionary Business".
Shock capitalism it is not ;-)
