The 5 Minute Crush

For the past 10 months my weekday morning routine kicked off with a leisurely breakfast around 8am, followed by a walk in the park with Kuri.

Not so Monday 18th February.

On that morning I wrote the outline of this post while riding the 8:11am train to my 6 month consulting IT gig.

Or rather, it was 8:11am when I thought of what I would be writing about later – because the train was too crowded to do anything but adopt an “upright meditating sardine” pose.

Actually, compared to the 90 minute 1-way commute on 3 different lines back in 1997, this 40 minute shunt’s a doddle.

Standing room only all the way but “sardine time” is a mere 5 minutes between 2 busy stations.

That’s just about long enough to do my current version of Betty Erickson’s light trance exercise.
(Remember to only do this type of self-hypnosis when it is safe to do so – and certainly not while driving or about to drive. I consider riding a train to be low risk!)

Most likely I will give myself suggestions for blog ideas to gestate during the working day – with the plan being to draft them on the homeward journey, and post at least one that evening for future publication.

Looks like the optimal way to continue to honor the intention I set for myself here, and I will be interested to see how it works out over the next few weeks.

Have you had any recent changes in direction, detours, or temporary alterations in your career planning?

Go It Alone!

I found Bruce Judson’s book, “Go It Alone!” very useful when planning my own career change.

The entire book is online for ‘free‘ at Bruce’s site and worth spending the time to go through relevant chapters and take a few notes.

Two chapters stick out in my mind:

Chp. 8 – Managing Extreme Outsourcing.

Chp. 11- When To Quit Your Day Job.

Effective outsourcing is even more attractive to me now that I am contracting for the next 6 months.

What did you get out of this book?

Living In Serious Times

Enjoy the 1st speed ride down the Eiger!

The Song is “Strengthen Your Mind” by Dezaire.

What’s all this got to do with career change?

You tell me!

But I reckon what happens at 2m 25s is a good representation of a mid-life crisis!

PS – Tons more speed riding videos at their Acro-base website.
I found they didn’t stream very well – easier to download them.

Japan’s Hina Matsuri Dolls Festival

Today is the 3rd day of the 3rd month in the lunar calendar and I can’t resist making a comment on the Japanese Dolls festival, also known as “Girls Day”.

That Japan is a modern country is taken for granted these days but there remain many traditions and customs still woven into her cultural fabric.

For example, after my daughter was born her grandparents bought this Dolls Set (Hina Ningyo) – all the pieces of which are carefully and individually wrapped and safely stored away until late February.

Whereupon the Emperor and Empress dolls awaken from their long sleep and are proudly displayed on a special “set” for all to see and admire.

(The Empress is on the right in this photo, as you look at it.)

This year we haven’t put out the gold colored screen – that’s why you can see the wall mirror! And, unfortunately, there are some pretty lamps and a fresh display of ume (plum) blossom that didn’t make the camera angle.

Still, I hope you can get a sense of the beauty and craftsmanship of even our simple one tier hina matsuri dolls set – some families have multiple tiers that can fill 2 or 3 tatami mats in a room!

Each year I see Ohina-sama (the empress) many of life’s deeper truths are gently calling me:

My daughter is growing out of childhood dependency.

Family love is a wonderful blessing.

There are ties that bind – in the purest and noblest ways.
(For me these have been building a career in Japan, starting a family and sharing with loved ones.)

Much as I also enjoy running my own career change coaching business, and the welcome cash injection from the recent IT consulting gig, Ricardo Semler’s words still ring true – “Success is not measured only in profit and growth“.

To all our daughters I have this to say:

“Girls! Be Ambitious!”

PS – Boys aren’t left out. The 5th day of the 5th month is “the Boys Festival” which I think is a Japanese national holiday called “Children’s Day.” Maybe March 3rd should be a holiday too!!
